Choosing a Xunantunich outing

Xunantunich tours from San Ignacio offer different ways to combine an archaeological visit with the surrounding region. Choose a site visit with optional riding or tubing, a trip pairing Xunantunich with Barton Creek, or the distinct outing that combines it with ATM Cave. These are different routes, so decide which cave or activity you want before comparing the included meals and transport.

The approach to Xunantunich includes San José Succotz and a hand-operated ferry across the Mopan River. Passengers must get out of vehicles for the crossing. Build the crossing into your day’s organisation, and follow the instructions on arrival. The San Ignacio guide gives the local base context; the arrival page helps you separate your journey to the region from the booked excursion.

A site visit with riding or tubing options

The Xunantunich offer with selectable combinations includes hotel collection and return within San Ignacio City, an English- and Spanish-speaking guide and entrance fees. Water and a snack belong to its half-day and half-day riding options. Horseback riding is included when that option is selected. Match the activity to your chosen variant rather than expecting every activity in a single booking.

The tubing combination options include cave tubing or river tubing with lunch, and equipment belongs to the combination options. The half-day and half-day riding choices exclude lunch. This distinction matters if you want to leave part of the day for something else or prefer a package that includes the meal. Tubing in these options is an activity outside ATM; it should not be confused with the swimming and wading required on the ATM route.

Use the pickup arrangement to choose a convenient base. A stay in San Ignacio City and a stay outside it involve different practical questions about reaching an agreed departure. The accommodation guide explains how to organise that choice without assuming that every outlying property falls within a tour’s collection area.

Xunantunich with Barton Creek

The Barton Creek combination starts at the Cayo Welcome Center and Tourist Information Center in San Ignacio. Its inclusions cover a guide, lunch, drinks, entrance fees, paddling equipment, an air-conditioned vehicle and transport between the sites. It suits a day plan centred on Xunantunich and Barton Creek, with the movement between the locations already part of the package.

Keep the cave name attached to that choice throughout your planning. Barton Creek is the cave visited by this combination. If your aim is specifically the archaeological cave experience at Actun Tunichil Muknal, choose the ATM combination instead. The shared word cave does not make the routes interchangeable, and different route requirements deserve their own attention.

ATM and Xunantunich combo

The outing pairing ATM with Xunantunich uses the Cayo Welcome Center as a meeting location and includes hotel collection and return from selected hotels only. Its services include a professional guide, equipment, park entrance fees, an air-conditioned vehicle, transport, lunch, refreshments, bottled water, snacks and towels. Arrange the actual start around the selected hotel or meeting location rather than assuming collection from any accommodation.

The ATM section requires good physical health and swimming ability, with swimming, wading, uneven rock and climbing. Life vest, helmet and light are required. Children must meet the national minimum height of 40 inches, equivalent to 101.6 cm. Separate offer conditions include an operator age of six and older, while another recommends twelve and older. Height alone does not establish suitability for the cave route.

High water can prevent the ATM visit and affect the combined day. Check the operating status and the booking’s arrangements for an affected itinerary. Cameras, video equipment and recording devices are prohibited inside ATM. The visitor rules explain footwear, socks and the physical demands, while the history page gives the archaeological context without a sensational account of human remains.

Admission and the shape of the day

The admission tariff effective from 1 January 2025, reviewed on 7 November 2026, gives non-resident adult entry to Xunantunich as USD 12.50. Keep that site fee separate from the full price of an organised excursion. Where a package includes entrance fees, do not add the standalone fee again. For ATM-specific admission questions, use the cave prices guide.

Agree the day’s timetable with your tour, including the river crossing and the selected combination. Use marked paths and suitable firm footwear at the archaeological site. Leave margin around onward travel rather than fitting a combined cave day tightly against a flight or ship departure. The choice between a site-focused outing and a combined day is chiefly a choice about what you want to experience and the demands you are prepared to meet.
